Major Accomplishments:

The "Frontline" conference was an essential policy catalyst yielding publication by the DOL of proposed Federal regulations for controlling bloodborne pathogens in hospitals

Established, funded, and managed 14 independent HIV/AIDS research and education projects related to protection of workers

Responsibilities:

Managed the Division research and technical assistance programs, including financial and personnel management, planning and evaluation

Annual operating budget of $4.5 million and 77 FTE positions

Recommendations for federal safety and health standards

Research and service programs included epidemiology, injury surveillance, engineering controls, ergonomics, accident investigations, asbestos, respirator research, and chemical protective clothing and equipment

Directed Federal regulatory program for testing and certifying respiratory protective devices (workplace respirators), manufacturer audits, inspections, and complaint investigations

Resolved personnel problems, including grievances and disciplinary actions.

Presented NIOSH testimony before the National Academy of Sciences panel to report to Congress the nation's progress on "Injury in America," which resulted in funding for a Center for Injury Control and Prevention.
